INSPIRED is the latest Mums in Business Tokyo project, launched in January 2017.
“Careers are a jungle gym, not a ladder” – Sheryl Sandberg, LeanIn
In 2016 I welcomed a Year 12 student from The British School in Tokyo to spend one week work experience with my team of recruitment consultants. The goal was to give him an insight into a commercial business. I was surprised at how engaged, bright and confident he was from day one, but also a little taken aback when it became clear that he had no idea which path he was likely to choose with regards to University course, which country to study in and what lay ahead. I was delighted to hear from his Head of Sixth Form that he returned to school one week later a different boy. After a week working with an office of 100 consultants, from 20 nationalities, he left with a new approach to the decisions he was going to have to make for his future.
Reflecting on this experience and the similar lack of clarity, direction and support I had as a student, I began to wonder how I could extend this further. How many more students could benefit today from the advice and guidance of experienced career women? Women, who have worked in multiple countries and gained a wealth of interesting stories and experiences they could share.
INSPIRED aims to support students at a critical stage of their lives and their educational development. Utilising the rich diversity of experience from the community of Mums in Business Tokyo we will challenge, guide and support more students and encourage each and every one of them to create their own interesting stories to tell. Through these interactions we will reinforce the importance of ensuring they have something to offer an educational institute and/or employer, above and beyond academic results.
